I met Flo Gurwin when I moved to Columbus in 2002. She and her husband, Phil (of blessed memory), were members of the congregation where I served as a rabbi. I got to know each of them separately. Flo was a regular at services every Saturday morning, and Phil belonged to the Health Club at the JCC where I also had a membership. Their daughter-in-law and I had attended Seminary at the same time (that was the late 1980s and early 1990’s) and their son was my confidante and dear friend–especially as I was going through divorce.
I do not remember exactly when I me Flo, but I do remember when I found out how old she was. I was incredulous. I would have guessed 10-15 years younger than she really was. To this day, she continues to be active–taking and teaching classes at the local JCC. She was recently featured in the alumni magazine of the Ohio State University. The article talks about the many ways that she has kept herself fit and how she helps others do the same.
Now, at 93, she still looks much younger than her years and is as sharp as a tack. Of course, genetics may have something to do with it, but there can be no doubt that Flo has taken good care of herself over the years. She personifies the idea that the choices we make today determine what tomorrow will look like.
Thanks, Flo, for the example you set, and for the inspiration you provide. Here’s to many more years in good health! Mazal Tov on this wonderful recognition from OSU.
